The general guided tour

We invite you to a guided tour led by a curator of the Museum. The tour is intended for visitors who would like to learn more about anthropology, i.e. the science of human. You will learn interesting facts about the life of the museum's founder Aleš Hrdlička, you will be introduced to the development of the human race. At the exhibits the lecturer will show you interesting facts that are visible on the material even after a long time. Egyptian mummies or death masks are also an attractive part of the tour. Do you know why death masks were created? What is typical of trepanation or phrenology? How does an ape skeleton differ from a human skeleton? What does a Venus of Vestoon or a mammoth tooth look like? We look forward to your visit.

Who were the anatomical ancestors of modern humans, and what evidence do we have for them? Paleoanthropology is the study of human evolution that began with the first discoveries of fossil humans in the mid-19th century. Come and learn more about human evolution, changing scientific perceptions and ideas about how our ancient ancestors lived and looked. You'll see our paleoanthropology collection, which dates back to the museum's founding. At the same time, you will learn the latest news from recent years, as we continue to learn more about human evolution thanks to scientific knowledge, and the process of discovery is not over.

During the tour we will first introduce you to the oldest preserved burials in our country. They were found on the territory of present-day Moravia and have provided scientists with a lot of interesting information. Then we will introduce you to our collection of death masks and hand casts. Are you interested in what death masks were and are used for? What notable personalities have they been taken from in recent years? Find out on our tour. You can't miss the mummies and the process of mummification. During the lecture, you will not only learn more about burial customs from the distant past, but also get tips on modern burial options.

Do you know the difference between natural and artificial mummification? What types of mummies do we know, and from what parts of the world? When and why did Ancient Egyptian embalmers begin to embalm the bodies of the deceased and prepare them for the afterlife? What did mummification look like, step by step? Why is it necessary to leave the deceased's heart in the body for a successful transition to the afterlife? What is the ceremony of weighing the heart, and what happens if deceased does not pass this test? Would you know what to take with you to the other side? Come and listen to an interesting theme. We will introduce you to our anthropological and Egyptological collection (the second largest collection of Ancient Egyptian mummies in our country) and the fascinating stories associated with it.
